El SistemaFREE Film & Discussion Friday, May 15, 2009 at Zion's Reformed UCC Contributions gratefully accepted. El Sistema explores the transformative power of music among children in the barrios of Venezuela. The film will receive its Lehigh Valley premiere this evening. El Sistema documents the program of the same name—a network of children's and youth orchestras, music centers and workshops in Venezuela, in which more than 250,000 young people are currently learning to play an instrument. The program was founded more than 30 years ago by José Antonio Abreu, in the poverty-stricken shantytowns of Caracas, Venezuela. The discussion to follow, moderated by Dr. Ethel Drayton-Craig, will ask whether and how a similar program might benefit the young people of the Lehigh Valley. Members of the Lehigh Valley's educational and arts communities are encouraged to participate. The Arts Luminarium The Arts Luminarium is a temple of the arts, fostering community transformation, celebrating human experience and inspiring a culturally creative movement.
